Day Four: 800 Freestyle Relay
Tuesday, July 31, 2012 @ 9:52 PM

For a lack of better words the Americans SLAYED the 800 Freestyle Relay tonight in London.  We took GOLD with a winning time of 6:59.70 making this the fourth relay in history to be under the four minute mark.  The French took Silver with a time of 7:02.77 and surprisingly China held off the favored Germany to win Bronze with a time of 7:06.30.

The American splits were VERY strong:
Ryan: 1:45.15
Conor: 1:45.23
Ricky: 1:45.27
Michael: 1:44.05

Ryan and Conor provided a strong lead for us in the first 400 meters and by the time Ricky entered the water there was no doubt we were in it to win it! When Michael entered the water the US had a lead of FOUR seconds making it impossible for anyone to catch us. This relay came shortly after Michael's shocking finish in the 200 fly, earning himself the silver medal. (This is the first time he's lost this race in 10 years.) He tied the record for most Olympic medals won by an individual also held by Russian Gymnast Larisa Latynina. As the race came to a close, Michael solidified his spot as the WINNINGEST Olympian of ALL TIME, earning career medal 19.  In addition to Michael's accomplishments both Michael and Ryan broke the "three peat curse" known to many by securing GOLD for the third time in this event. (04 and 08 previously)

In other swimming related news, we must mention one of our swim favorites Ricky Berens announced his RETIREMENT today after the 800 relay, shocking everyone, including us.
